What is Swami Vivekananda Jayanti?

Swami Vivekananda Jayanti is celebrated every year on January 12th, marking the birth anniversary of one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders and youth icons – Swami Vivekananda. This day is also observed as National Youth Day in India.

Swami Vivekananda was a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and he played a crucial role in introducing Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.

Life and Story of Swami Vivekananda

Born as Narendra Nath Datta in 1863 in Kolkata, Swami Vivekananda showed great intellectual and spiritual curiosity from a young age. Under the guidance of Sri Ramakrishna, he realized the unity of all religions and the divinity of the soul.

His historic speech at the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago in 1893, where he began with “Sisters and Brothers of America…”, introduced the world to India’s rich spiritual tradition and made him an international figure overnight.
